Our school and our students were the first ones to participate in a pilot program organized by the DOE Division of Multilingual Services called the "Onsite Career Discovery Program" on May 9th 2024. The Onsite Career Discovery Program is a series of field trips designed to expose multilingual and immigrant students to in-demand careers within high growth industries through a series of field trips, while also connecting them with role models who share similar social, cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Yesterday, 20 newcomer 10th grade students went on one of these field trips to the American Heart Association.
Students got a chance to learn about careers in medicine, science, and technology and met with doctors who shared their stories of developing a career with an immigrant background. Students felt incredibly inspired and showered the presenters with questions. They even learned practical skills of doing a "hands only" CPR.
