Prevention Activities

Monthly Theme Overview

The Youth Development Program (SPARK) offers a monthly calendar, which highlights prevention goals on Substance Abuse and Risk behaviors. This schedule for the school year reflects a wide range of prevention issues, which contributes to create and design projects, events, student forums, publications and counseling groups.

In SEPTEMBER, the theme is “Getting Organized: New Beginnings.” Classroom visits, peer presentations, distribution of prevention literature in the school cafeteria.

In OCTOBER, the theme is “Drug Abuse Prevention: Red Ribbon Celebrations”, creating awareness of the causes and consquences of drug abuse.

In NOVEMBER, the theme is “Smoking Prevention: The Great American Smoke Out.” Students will distribute stickers and red ribbons during the lunch periods.

In DECEMBER, the theme is “Community Service.” To increase awareness regarding peace and charity. Students will participate in clothing and toy drives for the disadvantaged and visit hospitals and shelters.

In JANUARY, the theme is “Violence Prevention”. Focus on the link between substance abuse and violence.Students will prepare and distribute blue ribbons.

In FEBRUARY, the theme is “Awareness of Respect as a Golden Rule”.Students will sell red roses during the lunch.

In MARCH, the them is “Substance Use and HIV Disease Prevention”. Classroom presentations, discussion groups, host experts speakers regarding these issues.

In APRIL, the theme is “Alcohol Prevention.” This is to encourage the prevention of adolescent drinking.

In MAY, Youth Town meetings, linkage to NYC Dept. Of Youth and Community Development.

In JUNE, the theme is “Drug Free SUmmer Activities.” Developing strategies with appropriate referrals to CBO.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION

Substance Abuse Prevention is part of the Office of Youth Development NYC Department of Education and OASAS State Substance Abuse Prevention Services. This program is designed to help students develop their full potential through preventative proactive approaches. The Prevention Counselor empowers students to meet challenges of life events and transitions by creating and reinforcing conditions that promote healthy behavior.

The Prevention Counselor provides Crisis Intervention and assistance to students and parents with family problems also make referrals to Community Service Providers. Federal confidentiality is assured in all but life threatening situations.

Life and Social Skills are developed through individual, group counseling and class presentations reflecting accurate information with emphasis on drug prevention.
